General Guide to
Domain & Registering them

All webpages have a web address

For example this page is located at

http://www.fluffbucket.com/general/hosting/domainreg.htm

Domain names are the key part of that address (for example here it would be www.fluffbucket.com).
On one level it simply tells the browser to go to the webserver hosting files in that domain name but on another level it can be the tag to the whole website
(for example if you want to go to Microsoft®'s website you'd type in www.microsoft.com)

With free webspace you're usually given a subdirectory on your hosts domain (and often that's not a high level address)

This site originally began life at

http://webspace.lineone.net/~alan.duncan/

Doesn't exactly roll of the tongue does it!!

For many the name isn't important (remember content is king on the net and people will still follow links). But many other people or companies wish to choose their own domain names.

We're going to look at all stages of domain name registration. First we'll look at the pros and cons of registering an address. We'll then look at what sort of addresses you can register, before discussing how to go about registering your domain. Finally we'll discuss what to do with your domain once you've got it
