General Guide to Domain Registration
Page 2 - The Pros & Cons

Before Deciding you need a domain name consider the following

THE PROS

  • Identity of the site/product etc.

You can get a domain name that gives your site an identity (e.g. most of the on line world knows of yahoo).

You can also use your brandname or a product name.

Take for example UK supermarket company Tesco
Can be found at www.tesco.co.uk .

  • Impact

Short and individual URL are easily remembered and associated with their sites/companies. Image a friend in the pub told you of 2 websites about your favourite movie.

Which of these 2 would you remember later on.....

    www.yourserver.net/webspace/~joe.bloggs/movie.htm

    Or

    www.thatmovie.com

  • Search engines

Sites with short individual domain name when manually reviewed seem to get added easier. Sad to say even Yahoo is guilty of this. . (We'd tried unsuccessfully to list our site originally as our free space address for 3+ months - our www.fluffbucket.com address was put in yahoo in weeks)

  • Gimmick, Kudos value

Hmm... bit guilty of this ourselves. Just don't ask why fluffbucket!!!

THE CONS

  • Cost

To actually register a domain it will cost you in some way. Does your site with pics of your hols in France really justify the expense, where you can get tons of webspace for free

  • Publicity

When you register a domain certain contact details have to be made available for public access. Usually this means amongst other things your listed email inbox will sadly get a tad more spam...
